My Favorites: The Creation (Die Schöpfung)Quartet No. 62 in C Major, Hob. III:77 (Op. 76 No. 3) 'Emperor'; Cello Concerto in C, H.VIIb, No. 1

My Thoughts: I hope to have something more substantial to say about Haydn soon, but until then, I can at least say that I like Haydn a lot.  I'm not sure how to characterize it exactly, but Haydn's music seems somehow freer and more exuberant than the Baroque music I've listened to so far.  While Handel's Messiah has the visceral appeal of being composed in my native language, I'll go out on a limb and say that I think Haydn's Schöpfung is better.  The Messiah might have a greater apotheosis in the Hallelujah Chorus, but I think the Creation is more consistently stirring, as a whole composition.
